“N & D Chapter 3″ – DUE: Monday, February 14th – 20 POINTS

After reading Chapter 3 of Nickel and Dimed and locating an article published within the last year that in SOME WAY speaks to the ideas communicated by Ehrenreich…

1. post the title of the article, the dateline, the byline (author’s name), and a LINK for the article (so EVERYONE can locate/read it, if the mood strikes them)

2. indicate in no fewer than 100 words how the article communicates ideas that are similar to Ehrenreich’s in Chapter 3 (i.e. What common bonds exist between your recently published article and 10-year-old research on low wages?)  In addition to content, consider the author’s voice, biases, style, and even background.

Late submissions will be penalized 3 points per day, so make sure they are in by February 11th!  Also, because I anticipate some students using articles that other students use, an extra couple of points will be thrown to students who are the FIRST to post an article.  In other words, if one article is used by 14 students, the first student to post his/her response utilizing that article will receive an extra 2 points.  Perhaps that will motivate some individuals to post sooner than later.

Nickel & Dimed and “30 Days” – DUE: BEFORE THE NEW YEAR

Howdy, young journalists.  Your first post to this page will be in conjunction with Ehrenreich’s Nickel and Dimed and Spurlock’s “30 Days.”  Quite simply, and in 75-100 words, indicate whether Spurlock’s low-wage experiment/research is more than, less than, or equally credible to Ehrenreich’s work (through the first chapter of Nickel & Dimed – “Serving in Florida”).  In arguing your point, also indicate WHY you believe what you do AND how your perception of the “stars” (Ehrenreich and Spurlock) influences how you digest each piece.

I expect ORIGINAL responses.  Bear that in mind when you publish your posts to the page.  In addition to meeting requirements for length, understand that you will be graded on meaning, development, organization, language use and conventions.  That means RESPOND ONLY TO THE TASK THAT’S GIVEN, PROVIDE SUFFICIENT DETAIL TO ILLUSTRATE YOUR POINT(S), ORGANIZE YOUR RESPONSE APPROPRIATELY, USE APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE TO COMMUNICATE YOUR IDEAS, and MAKE CERTAIN TO AVOID ERRORS IN SPELLING, GRAMMAR, AND PUNCTUATION

This first post is worth 15 points!!!  Remember, it’s due BEFORE THE NEW YEAR!
